Kali Linux offensive security as your self defense...

Offensive Security As Your Self Defense

Machine Soul

How's security? Comfortable with your free anti-virus program? After all, it was free, right? You think that firewall will protect you? Do you have hidden secrets that you think you’ve permanently deleted from your hard drive? Oh, I see. You use WPA2 encryption, the latest and most effective wireless protection for you in-home wireless router. Right…I guess you wouldn’t figure someone might actually be able to bruteforce your ridiculous wireless password or somehow gain full control of your PC.
You just gave your attacker free access to your internet! Congratulations! That’s not all. That “LOG IN” button you clicked when you thought you were going to be magically transported to the world of Lets-Put-Everything-About-Me-On-The-Internet, you actually activated a virus called a Reverse Meterpreter that has now embedded itself into your system and is allowing your attackercomplete control of your machine! He or she can now activate your webcam and take photos or video of you; activate your computers microphone and eavesdrop on your early morning sex with your significant other or…your mistress; install a keylogger that records all of your keystrokes (there goes your bank account); upload a bunch of childporn and anonymously tip off the FBI (there goes the house, wife and kids)!
This could happen to you. Or you could happen to it. Don’t get hacked. In fact, hack back. I’ll show you how they do it…and most times, I’ll show you how to protect yourself.
So lets get started. First of all, if you are into it, then get Kali Linux. The best way to download this is as an ISO image. This will allow running the program LIVE from the CD or later installing it next to your Windows OS in a dual-boot set-up. This is the method we will download today. So you WILL NEED a blank writable DVD and of course, a DVD burner on your computer. So once you get to the download page, you may register or just click ”No thanks…”. Now you must know if your system is a 32 or 64bit system. Check this by going to START, Rick-click COMPUTER and selectProperties. Verify your system to the right of System Type. Now on the download screen of Kali Linux, select the appropriate ISO image to burn. Under the “Architecture” tab, i386 is for 32bit systems and AMD64 is for 64bit systems. Don’t biff this.
 Installation Prerequisites
  • A minimum of 8 GB disk space for the Kali Linux install.
  • For i386 and amd64 architectures, a minimum of 512MB RAM.
  • CD-DVD Drive / USB boot support
Preparing for the Installation
Burn The Kali Linux ISO to DVD or Image Kali Linux Live to USB.
Ensure that your computer is set to boot from CD / USB in your BIOS.
Kali Linux Installation Procedure
1. To start your installation, make sure your PC is set to boot from the CD/DVD drive in your BIOS. If you don’t know how or can’t find out how to do that, then stop now; don’t even fuck with Kali. Just give up on this. Okay, put the new ISO disk you just burned into the image drive and boot from it. You should be greeted with the Kali Boot screen. Choose either Graphical (Recommended) or Text-Mode (Super Users) install. In this example, we chose a GUI install.
1
2. Select your preferred language and then your country location. You’ll also be prompted to configure your keyboard with the appropriate keymap.
2
3. The installer will copy the image to your hard disk, probe your network interfaces, and then prompt you to enter a hostname for your system. In the example below, we’ve entered “kali” as our hostname.
3
4. Enter a robust password for the root account.
4
5. Next, set your time zone.
5
6. The installer will now probe your disks and offer you four choices. In our example, we’re using the entire disk on our computer and not configuring LVM (logical volume manager). You may also get the option “Use available free space” which will perform a dual boot scenario with your existing Windows installation. Be sure to install GRUB boot manager near the end. Experienced users can use the “Manual” partitioning method for more granular configuration options.
6
7. Next, you’ll have one last chance to review your disk configuration before the installer makes irreversible changes. After you click Continue, the installer will go to work and you’ll have an almost finished installation.
7
8. Configure network mirrors. Kali uses a central repository to distribute applications. You’ll need to enter any appropriate proxy information as needed.
NOTE! If you select “NO” in this screen, you will NOT be able to install packages from Kali repositories.
8
9. Next, install GRUB.
9
10. Finally, click Continue to reboot into your new Kali installation.
